Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford began acting during her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
